对雪 Facing the Snow

One of my favorite poems by the poet Du Fu (杜甫), "Facing the Snow" 《对雪》

战哭多新鬼

愁吟独老翁
乱云低薄暮

急雪舞回风
瓢弃樽无绿

炉存火似红
数州消息断

愁坐正书空

Hosts of ghost of the fall'n in battle are lamented;

Alone an old wretched man doth sadly sing.

Chaotic masses of clouds hang low o'er the coming dusk;

Drifting snow flakes dance and swirl upon the wind.

Long hath I abandoned my gourd and vacant my mug remaineth;

Yet the fire that doth live in the brazer still glows red.

News of the other states hath long been severed;

All one can do is sit alone in lorn grief sowing the air with sorrow.

Inner Contradictions

Inner contradiction,

Is what I feel for her.

Inflicted affliction,

By her lies and love defer’d.

Intoxicating addiction,

By the emotions, within me, stir’d.

Shall, once more, I allow myself to be fooled?

Fool me twice, hence shall I be ruled?

Or is forgiveness divine, and temperaments be cooled?

Shall I once more feel rejection?

Shall I once more be losing?

Shall I once more risk affection?

Shall I once more be confusing?

Only to be hurt and humiliated again?

With all the myriad of emotions swirling within,

Most of all is desire to absolve her of her sin,

To start anew, and afresh

For within her I have found a new beauty

Not of the figure or the flesh.

But beauty of the soul and mind, before hidden.

Where at once I had marveled at her gorgeousness,

I now look to find new love in her charm and intelligence.

Lustfull Supression

Big dark eyes,

Staring right back at me.

All so wise

Mirrors of souls I see.

Smooth silk skin,

Tempting me to caress.

Devilish sin -

Desire making a mess.

Bright wide smile,

Soothing my troubled soul.

All the while,

Lustful bliss takes its toll.

Luscious lips,

Luridly seducing.

For to kiss,

Yet a chance I'm missing.

Must I keep suppressing and livin'

For a chance you have not yet given?

Amorous Supression

Sometimes we get what we want,

And all the worse comes of it.

Unrequited love can haunt

When a night's passion one gets.

Carnal craving is fulfilled

Sacrificing a close friend.

With a kiss, a bond was killed

I dread it will never mend.

A friend, a love, know not I,

I know only her I desire.

Should my passion be denied

To save amity from a fire?

Is wrong that which pleases me?

That I may love one is wrong?

My pleasure becomes debris

While for her I pine and long.

Amourous suppression, while I hope the impossible

That friends becoming amorous is somehow possible.
